- [S193] Metropolitan Police, Metropolitan Police Pension Registers, About London, England, Metropolitan Police Pension Registers, 1852-1932
This collection consists of registers of pensions awarded to Metropolitan Police officers who retired or resigned from the force between 1852 and 1932, and who were granted, or who (after 1890) qualified for, a police pension.
The records in this collection include personal information about the officer and you may find a place of birth, marital status, parents and next of kin, service details, and from 1923, details of spouse (date of birth and place of their marriage).
The entries in the volumes are arranged in order of pension number, which generally corresponds to the date of resignation although in some instances this chronological order has not been strictly followed. The pension numbering system was altered periodically and reflects administrative changes within the Pensions Branch.
- [S194] The Royal Hospital Chelsea, Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Admission and Discharge Records, This collection is made up of registers of the award of out-pensions of the Royal Hospital Chelsea to soldiers discharged from the Regular Army or the Militia on account of disability. The Royal Hospital Chelsea was the administrative office for the British army and was responsible for distributing pension payments to British soldiers since the 1680s. While some pensioners surrendered their pension to the hospital and lived there (“in-pensioners”), many more lived outside the confines and received their pensions elsewhere (“out-pensioners”). Army Pensioners formed a significant portion of the population; in 1828, there were just over 85,000 Army pensioners in the UK. From 1883 to 1913, this collection also includes discharge papers of men discharged after the new short service of 7 years in the regular Army, followed by 5 years in the reserve. For each record, details given include, where available: a brief description of the pensioner together with age, place of birth, particulars of service and the reason for discharge. The entries are made chronologically according to the date of the Pension Board which decided the eligibility of, and the rate of pension to be granted to, each man; this was generally the date of the soldier's discharge from the Army.
